Fighting for Students.
A native of Tallahassee, Laurie attended Ruediger, Griffin, and Leon before beginning a career as a Physical Education Teacher in the Leon County School system for 33 years. As a parent, teacher, and product of Leon Schools, Laurie has a unique and effective perspective on how our schools shape our community and vice-versa.
In 2022, Laurie Lawson-Cox was elected to the Leon County School Board in a campaign built on the concerns of local parents, not partisan talking points. Now more than ever she is committed to transparency and trust with all stakeholders in our community – parents, students and teachers.
Laurie has served on numerous committees and boards and has served in youth ministry at church as a teacher and leader for over 35 years. She credits her parents as incredible role models who taught her to love God, family, and others, and to live a life of serving all those with whom we come in contact.

“I am running because I believe our schools can be better. I believe when we listen to parents and prioritize not only the physical health but also the mental health of our students and teachers, our schools will thrive!”
Laurie knows that a good education is critical to our children’s success, and that’s why she will always fight to keep our schools open.
Extracurricular activities build community and are vital to students’ personal development. Laurie will continue to prioritize, support, and fund these important programs.
Our schools should be places where students are safe, period. Laurie will make sure our schools have the security and mental health resources they need to keep our children safe, and she will work with local law enforcement to ensure school safety protocols are up to date.
Understanding how our government works is a crucial part of becoming an educated and informed individual. Laurie will work to implement a robust civics education program in Leon County schools that allows students to learn about government without injecting politics into the classroom.
Laurie is determined to prepare our children for a dynamic future. That means making sure vocational and career training opportunities are available to students who wish to gain technical experience and certifications to begin building their careers while in school.
Laurie is committed to listening and responding to the concerns of everyone in Leon County who cares about improving our schools and student experience. Please sign up to receive our monthly newsletter (no spam, we promise!) and make sure to follow us on social media when you can!
